The modern job hunting process is a meat grinder. It’s archaic. It’s one-sided. It’s bloated. It’s stupid. The #1 reason people don’t move on from their current role is because they know how painful it will be to find another. That’s not a great reason to stay where you’re at.
Fortunately, even amidst that meat grinder, there are some fundamental choices you can make, and some very big, very obvious, and very simple odds you can pull to tilt the odds significantly in your favor.
Have you ever seen those LinkedIn posts where people say they’ve applied to 200+ jobs and never heard back? Whenever I hear stories like this, I always want to point out the person that you’re not hearing back after 10-20 applications, perhaps it’s time for a very different strategy.
Application & Results
Markus, a sales professional, had hit the limits of his current role. Things were stale and he couldn’t see a future at the company. He had an amazing track record of success and had never missed quota after 10+ years in sales. He should have been an easy hire for any organization, but the job market (and the antiquated hiring process) had other plans.
After a half a year on the hunt, he found himself at a role with tons of accountability and room for growth, a much better salary, and an uncapped commission structure that meant he was finally motivated properly to go out there and hunt for deals.
It wasn’t an easy journey, but there were a few techniques we used to make it happen:
Learning that interviews are not one-way engagements. You are interviewing the company at the same time they are interviewing you. Great employers pick up on this.
There are no “rules” in a job application or an interview. There will be recommendations, norms, and even requests from the hiring side; but that doesn’t mean you can’t break or bend any of them.
Doing exactly what all other applicants do means you’re going to be exactly like them. You need to get very familiar with the word: remarkable; then you need to make yourself remarkable.
